America at the Crossroads: A Call to Return to Godly Foundations
Devotions: 'Jewels from the Word of God' by Pastor Mike Gobel Sr.
“Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, ‘One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.’” — Mark 10:21 (NKJV)
The American nation, once rooted in God-fearing principles and forged by men who honoured the Word of God, now stands at a dangerous crossroads. Scenes of chaos, destruction, hatred, and rebellion flood our screens. The moral compass that once guided her decisions now appears shattered, her children confused, and her streets overtaken by violence and disorder. These are not isolated political disturbances, nor are they merely the product of economic dissatisfaction—they are spiritual tremors shaking a foundation that has drifted far from Christ.
From the insights of Charles Spurgeon, we are reminded that we do not choose our cross. God, in His divine wisdom, appoints it. The invitation of Christ is not to worldly comfort, but to spiritual sacrifice. It is not a call to material gain but to spiritual maturity. Jesus bore His cross for us—do we now refuse to carry ours for Him?
Today’s widespread acceptance of “health and wealth” ideologies is a stark deviation from the rugged Gospel of Christ. Prosperity preachers reduce faith to a tool of manipulation—a means to an end—rather than a gift and trust placed in the sovereign will of God. The Apostle Paul, writing under the weight of persecution and imprisonment, reminds us: “For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake” (Phil. 1:29).
Grace, likewise, has been grossly misunderstood. The ‘gift of grace’ is not a divine hall pass to continue in sin. Paul declares, “Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not!” (Rom. 6:1-2). True grace transforms. It convicts the soul, renews the mind, and sets the heart ablaze for righteousness. A gospel without repentance is a half-truth—a heresy cloaked in pleasantries.
The American people, and for that matter, the entire world (this is not just an American thing) must ask: How did we come to accept such a diluted Gospel? Why have we allowed secular ideologies to replace divine truth? This is not simply about immigrants, elections, freedom of speech or right to protest—it is about spiritual and moral decay. When men and women reject the moral law of God, they invite chaos, confusion, and the collapse of a Godly society.
Marxist Ideologies: Poison to Liberty
At the heart of today’s chaos lies an insidious ideological battle. Marxism and its modern offshoots seek to dismantle everything that makes a free society function: private property, the family unit, individual liberty, and religious freedom. It promotes class warfare instead of unity, entitlement over personal responsibility, and state control over individual agency. Where Christ offers transformation of the heart, Marxism demands allegiance to the state. One leads to liberty through righteousness, the other to bondage through tyranny.
Consider Proverbs 14:34: “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” When a society abandons biblical truth and embraces lawlessness, it cannot survive. America’s current spiritual and moral decline is not incidental—it is the result of abandoning her first love. The love for God, family and country. These are the elements that laid the foundation for America’s Constitution and Independence.
What Must We Do?
There is still hope, but it lies not in Washington, D.C., nor in the corridors of power. It lies at the foot of the cross. America must repent—not merely as individuals, but as a nation. “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (2 Chron. 7:14).
We must:
1. Return to the Word of God – Let Scripture once again be the foundation of our families, schools, and government.
2. Raise Up Righteous Leaders – Men and women of courage, integrity, and fear of God, not of man.
3. Reject False Doctrines – Call out teachings, lectures and professors that preach comfort over conviction and that indoctrinate our youth with wayward ideologies and false doctrine.
4. Uphold Law and Order – Apprehend and arrest those that break the law, irrespective of their social status, title, or political affiliation.
5. Break all ties with Communist/Marxist type regimes – You cannot control or change the nature of a snake or a wild beast. Either you destroy it, or you isolate it from causing you any threat or harm, but don’t ever try and befriend the enemy when its sole purpose (it’s DNA) is to destroy or harm you.
6. Restore Godly Homes – Strengthen the family unit as ordained by God.
7. Pray Without Ceasing – Revival never comes without fervent prayer and repentance.
The words of Christ remain true today: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you” (Matt. 6:33). Our focus needs to be on Christ and on bringing America and its people back to a place of Godly values and virtues.
Let every American believer take up their cross. Let every church return to biblical preaching. Let every father and mother lead their homes in godliness. Let every citizen vote not with their wallet, but with their conscience and the Word of God.
This is not merely a political moment. It is a spiritual reckoning. As Christ warned the lukewarm church in Laodicea: “Because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth” (Rev. 3:16). The time has come to choose: will we follow Christ or the crowd?
May the Lord bless America with repentance, restoration, and revival. And may His people rise as light in the darkness.
